“What are key levers to shift deep contributing factors of Australia’s underperformance on the nation’s most important issues?”
Recoded is a solutions-focused research program that engages diverse decision-makers across the nation so that, together, we can create the knowledge and support to improve Australia’s future. Next25 conducts deeply immersive interviews with emerging and established leaders, distilling their views to identify deep contributing factors of Australia’s underperformance and levers to shift them.
Next25 is currently developing an initiative to address Constructive Discussion in Australia. While we aim to design, test, build, and scale initiatives to shift all identified deep contributing factors, our current resources allow us to take one new opportunity to the next step.
Constructive Discussion
Our ability to talk constructively about contested issues is key to creating the future Australia wants.
With the impending referendum, we were curious to find out the barriers and enablers that people in Australia encounter when discussing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. In short, how well are we talking about national issues?
Our latest research report, “Contested Spaces: Australia, the Referendum, and Constructive Discussion”, offers insights into those key barriers and enabling factors. It is based on interviews with 15 people who have professional experience with productive and unproductive conversations and have worked across a diverse range of industries.
This report is one in a series about constructive discussion in Australia, and its findings and key concepts will be expanded in future research and activities, eventually feeding into the design of an intervention that will improve Australia’s ability to make the future its people want.

Recoded Report 2021
We have been working on one of these factors, trust in government, for the past eight years with our longest-standing improvement, Next25 Leadership. Our research continues to uncover levers as the nation adapts and evolves, identifying four additional deep contributing factors in our 2021 Recoded Report below.

The full report draws from 50 deeply reflective, one-on-one interviews. It explores and synthesises how established and emerging leaders from different parts of this complex system understand it in its current incarnation, and how they believe it might be transformed to ensure intergenerational success.
“I think it's a fantastic conversation. This kind of imaginative, exploratory piece about what are the opportunities and challenges that we face in the system is really important and really exciting. I'm just really glad that you guys are convening this thinking, and having these conversations”
